Zoomed section of 1842 Map showing workhouse, girls school and ford. The ford runs through the river where today's stepping stones are, but not where the stepping stones are shown on the 1925 Map.
There is no mention that the building where the mart is today, had anything to do with livestock in 1842, but if you visit the site at:-
http://communities.northumberland.gov.uk/Rothbury.htm  then go to the menu item 'printed materials', you will see from an old extract of the 'Hexham Courant', dated 25th February 1870, a 'Mart' was opened here by Mr. Robert Donkin.
It was calculated that
'....it would increase the prosperity of the neighbourhood'.
They had a good day by all accounts, with mutton realising 10d per lb and beef from 9s 9d to 10s 3d per stone.
