Coquetdale Archaeology is a community project which links local people to local archaeology. Through the project, residents of Coquetdale and neighbouring communities are getting involved in exploring and investigating the hidden history of their homes, villages, and the local landscape.

The Smallpipes

When most people think of bagpipes they think of the great Highland Pipes from Scotland but the bagpipe is a large family of traditional music instruments which can be found all over Europe in many different forms .
The Northumbrian Smallpipes consist of a set of elbow-operated bellows which deliver air to a large airbag. This in turn feeds the air to the chanter and also to a set of harmonising drones. Each of the drones produces a single note, but they are tuned to produce a harmonic background sound to complement the melody being played on the chanter.

Rothbury has it's own Lodge which meets in the Alnwick Masonic Hall

The Coquetdale Lodge was formed in 1929 in the village of Rothbury, Northumberland.

Coquetdale Crest                                    Masons at Beamish

The lodge originally met in the County Hotel, which is now the building owned by the RAF, situated at the western edge of Rothbury. In 1936 the old girls school was purchased and converted to a masonic hall. Meetings continued there until 1985, when the lodge moved to Alnwick.

Anyone who is researching family history is welcome to contact the Lodge. In the heyday of the lodge, there can be scarcely a family in the whole of Coquetdale who was not connected in some way, either through family, business, marriage or friendship

Playhouse

Alnwick Playhouse

The Playhouse was originally built in 1925 and operated as a 700 seat Cinema and occasional Music Hall until changing public tastes led to a sad decline and eventual closure in 1979.  The building was only saved from demolition by the professional touring group Northumberland Theatre Company.  They bought the building and converted the ground floor into a rehearsal and administrative base for their productions.  The Company are now known as NTC Touring Theatre Company and take their highly acclaimed productions all over the country.

The Playhouse now presents a balanced programme of music, drama, dance, film and exhibitions embracing local amateur groups and the best touring professional companies.

Birdwatching tours in Northumberland

Northumbria is one of the UK's richest regions for birds. More than 400 species have been recorded here including one of the worlds rarest, the Slender-billed Curlew, as well as the extinct Great Auk. Our wealth in birds is largely due to Northumbria's remarkable diversity of habitat which ranges from mountain moorland to rocky coast, and to an eastern coastline that receives impressive numbers of migrants from the continent during the autumn.

Each season has something to offer in Northumbria:

While many anglers are not trophy conscious the Coquet Trophy presented to the captor of the river’s first salmon of the season has become an institution on the Coquet and the holder will receive three years free permits and a replica of the trophy to retain.
