Northumberland
in March...
The
new lambs are in the fields - as last season's Northumbrian hill
lamb comes to an end.
The
end of the winter veg but there's still some to be had
including: potatoes, swede, leeks, carrots, parsnips, winter
greens though the sprouts are finished. Game
is out of season - though there should be the odd bit of rabbit,
enough for the traditional 'Easter Bunny' pie.
The hens and ducks are starting to lay better - there are plenty
of eggs to be had. And
of course - there are always the great Northumbrian cheeses,
ham, bacon, sausages - not to mention conserves and chutneys
carrying forward memories of last summer.
And the shellfish is coming to an end – Holy Island mussels,
crab and the occasional lobster can sometimes be found at
Alnwick, Berwick, Morpeth and Ponteland markets |

|
Lying in the
valley of the River Till, the communities of Ford, Etal,
Branxton, Milfield and Crookham have so much to offer.
First-time visitors may have been drawn by the principal
attractions, but as regulars to the area will confirm, there is
so much to see and do that one visit simply will not reveal all.
